Amazing Grace, How Sweet to Share
Tina Smith received a huge unexpected blessing on January 28th. Mrs. Smith had just been released from the hospital after suffering a stroke. She returned home to her South Memphis home of 25 years to find her house looked like the scene of Extreme Home Makeover. Her home had been in dire need of repairs for many years. Water had been getting into her roof and her floor was caving in. While she was in the hospital a family friend called the Warriors Center Recovery Program for help with the home repairs.
The Warriors Center is involved in community outreach and neighborhood repairs for the needy and signed up to complete all of the needed repairs at Mrs. Smith’s home. For three Saturdays in a row up to 35 men from the Warriors Center converged on the home to tackle this large project. Joey Honshell, a Warriors Center resident and lifelong contractor gave a rousing speech at the beginning of the project. He stated “I have spent entirely too much time in my life doing wrong and taking away from society. This is an opportunity for me to give back. This is an opportunity for all of us to give back.” Encouraged by the pep talk, the Warriors Center took the property by storm.
Work that was accomplished included roof repairs, exterior siding replacement, replacement of rafters and sub flooring, remodeling a kitchen & bathroom, new floor installation, and complete landscaping.
When Mrs. Smith returned home to find the Warriors Center completing her home she was moved to tears. She said “I can’t believe that this could happen to me especially with such a large group of men. My house has been in bad condition for so many years. This is beyond anything I could ever imagine. This has to be God because only he could do something like this.”
Chris, a resident of the Warriors Center, was also moved to tears after witnessing Mrs. Smith’s gratitude and witnessing firsthand how much his work was helping someone else. He stated “I am so thankful to be able to be here to be a blessing to someone else. I really want to change my life. This really helps me to know that I can be better.” The Warriors Center is a faith based recovery program in the Memphis area that focuses its programming on giving back to the community through a variety of outreaches such as homeless feeding programs, nursing home ministries, food pantry outreach, community rehab and mission trips to foreign countries.
